Finding Confederate veterans in Census records

To find a veteran of the Confederate Army, check the Alabama State Census for 1907, 1921 and 1927; Arkansas State Census in 1911; and the Louisiana State Census in 1911.

Their Social Security Number

If your ancestor worked for U. S. Railroads, their social security information can be found under the Railroad Retirement Board records.  The first three digits of their Social Security Number range from 707 to 728.

Y-DNA Sernam study group

Joining a Y-DNA surname study, which tests individuals with the same or similar surname to find relationships, also is a good way to make connections.

Scanning for Publishing purposes

If you are scanning images for the purpose of creating a report, or publishing a family history, then scanning in color or grey scale at 300 dots per inch resolution, will give you the best quality.

Settings for document scans

Scanning lots of documents for your family history project?  if so, scan them in grey scale, not color, and use a low-resolution of 72 dots per inch.  This will save space and make your scans go faster.

Guidelines for copying photos

When you're copying old family photographs, see if you can find the original negative.

How to preserve defined

Use archival quality acid-free sheet protectors for all of your original documents, master copies and photographs.

Look for archival label information

Look for the archival label on storage products - “acid free” or “archival safe”.

Do NOT laminate documents

Do not laminate your documents.  A laminated document can never be restored to its original state.

Oral History interviews and photos

Bring old photographs with you when you visit relatives to conduct oral history interviews and ask your interview subject to show you his or her photo collection.

We are indebted to Lee County Genealogy Society (FL) for a large majority of the "Facts" available on this page. Their list originally contained just over 490 facts. We have reduced that number for our site but will add some as we continue to build our new website.
